Autism Q & A

Is there a new treatment for autism?

There is an innovative drug-free treatment for autism called Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT). This treatment uses repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) technology. MeRT is an emerging technology that aims to improve brain function and communication. The equipment used in MeRT is FDA-cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder and OCD and is used off-label to treat a variety of other conditions, including autism spectrum disorder.

With rTMS technology, gentle magnetic waves stimulate certain parts of the brain to improve brain pathway connections and overall brain function.

This remarkable treatment has shown some incredible success in improving many common symptoms of autism, affecting areas such as:

  • Speech
  • Eye contact
  • Ability to connect with and interact with others
  • Sleep

Every brain is different, and the brains of children who have autism typically have unique characteristics.

Understanding these differences is key to effective treatment, and that is exactly what Braincare Performance Center - Cardiff offers: detailed brain analysis and leading-edge treatment.  We treat children 10 years of age and older.

My child has autism. What can we expect during treatment?

The team specializes in customized autism treatment, so the first step is assessing brainwave activity.

Your child's Braincare journey begins with a noninvasive and painless brainwave recording, also called a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG), in a quiet dark room in our office. This creates a blueprint of electrical activity in the brain.

The EEG recording results are then evaluated to get a full picture of your child’s current brain state. The recording will show patterns of disruption between the brain's neural networks, allowing us to provide a fully customized treatment plan that caters to their individual needs.

Sessions typically last 30 minutes. The exact treatment course depends on your child’s individual needs. Your child's treatment will be monitored closely with bi-weekly EEGs and clinical reviews to check on the progress of the treatment. For best results, the recommended treatment course is between 4 to 8 weeks.

How effective is MeRT for children with autism?

MeRT shows remarkable results in many children with autism. In recent trials, 66% of children experienced speech improvement, and 70% experienced improved eye contact. Additionally, many children had dramatic improvements in sleep and social behaviors.

Parents often praise the treatment for giving them a whole new level of connection with their child and greatly improving family dynamics.
