Head Injury Q & A

What is a traumatic head injury?

A traumatic head injury is a brain injury that develops after some type of forceful impact. Examples include a bump, collision with another person, blow to the head, or auto accident.

Concussions, the most common type of traumatic head injury, occur when a forceful impact causes the brain to move in unusual ways (bouncing or twisting abnormally) inside your skull. This can cause a brain chemistry disturbance and may damage or destroy brain neurons.

What problems can a head injury cause?

Head injuries can cause wide-ranging problems, including:

  • Decreased athletic performance
  • Poor coordination
  • Confusion
  • Attention span issues
  • Memory problems
  • Increased impulsivity
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Balance problems
  • Headache
  • Sleep disturbances

Many athletes experience repeated hits to the head during their careers. When combined with issues like sleep deprivation, poor diet, stress, and other factors, these injuries can have a serious effect on brain health and lead to problems in their sport as well as a decline in general wellness.

What is the best treatment for traumatic head injury?

Braincare Performance Center - Cardiff offers comprehensive care, including MeRT therapy, to help you rebuild your functional abilities after a traumatic brain injury.

The centerpiece of our traumatic head injury treatment is Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT). This therapy is a highly customized form of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), which uses the power of magnetic energy to stimulate positive changes in the brain.

It can promote the release and balancing of beneficial brain neurotransmitters and also stimulates neuroplasticity brain remodeling and rebuilding in the areas of damage.

Treatment begins with highly detailed brain mapping using a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and an electrocardiogram (EKG). The goal is to understand your brain and brain-heart connection and detect specific areas where your brain could function better.

MeRT is customized for your unique brain, from the specific areas it treats to the frequency delivered. After every two weeks of treatment, you will receive a follow-up EEG and clinical review to check your progress.

Many athletes opt for MeRT to optimize their performance. The difference between an average and a superior athlete is often the “mental game.” MeRT can give you the edge you need to be your very best.

This treatment is a very safe and gentle therapy. MeRT is a cutting-edge treatment process that combines TMS, a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and an Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) to analyze and formulate treatments that are tailored to each individual’s unique brain pattern.

MeRT is an emerging technology that aims to improve brain function and communication. The equipment used in MeRT is FDA-cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder and OCD and is used off-label to treat a wide variety of conditions, including TBI and Concussions.
