PTSD Q & A

What symptoms does PTSD cause?

PTSD causes intrusive and disturbing thoughts and feelings following a traumatic event. The condition affects 7 in 100 veterans during their lifetime, but occurs nearly as often among civilians, affecting 6 in 100 people.

PTSD causes:

  • Vivid flashbacks
  • Unwanted thoughts or mental images
  • Excessive sweating, shaking, and nausea
  • Excessive alertness
  • Sleep disruptions
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Becoming startled easily
  • Distrust in others
  • Difficulty relating to others
  • Difficulty feeling positive emotions
  • Emotional or physical numbness
  • Reckless or destructive behaviors

Trying to blot out unwanted thoughts, feelings, and memories with alcohol and drugs isn’t uncommon with PTSD. For example, about one-third of veterans who struggle with substance abuse also have PTSD.

What is the new treatment for PTSD?

Braincare Performance Center - Cardiff offers Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT), one of the newer drug-free and noninvasive PTSD treatments.

PTSD can cause different symptoms in each person and even when symptoms are similar, no two people are exactly alike. The team recognizes these differences and believes that your unique brain patterns and function should play a primary role in treatment.

Your treatment starts with advanced brain mapping — a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and an electrocardiogram (EKG) — to discover the parts of the brain with decreased function (the cause of your symptoms).

Then, the team customizes a repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) protocol to meet your needs. This treatment approach uses magnetic waves to gently stimulate certain targeted areas of your brain based on your brain mapping.

This magnetic stimulation encourages healthy brainwave activity and helps to rebuild dormant and damaged neural pathways. Once your brainwaves are operating in a healthy manner, your symptoms and behaviors of PTSD will subside.

Is MeRT effective for PTSD?

MeRT can be extremely effective for people who are struggling with PTSD, depression, and other mental health conditions.

With numerous studies demonstrating its effectiveness, rTMS technology is now recognized by the Veterans Health Administration and leading medical specialists as a safe and effective treatment option, even when other treatments haven’t worked.

After every two weeks of daily treatments, you'll receive an EEG and clinical review to assess your progress. A typical course of treatment is six weeks long.

MeRT can provide connection, restoration, and peace of mind to people with PTSD. If you’re ready to learn more, call the Braincare Performance Center - Cardiff office or schedule your appointment online now.
