What is MeRT?

MeRT, also known as Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is a breakthrough treatment that brings balance to the brain. 

Your brain is unique, with its own optimal frequency. When internal or external forces affect you, the nerve cell communication pathways in your brain weaken or go dormant. This can have many frustrating mental, emotional, and physical effects.

The Braincare process locates the root cause of these issues through highly advanced brain mapping. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) — a treatment using painless magnetic pulses — then addresses those issues. MeRT therapy helps create more coherent brain network connectivity.

Traditional rTMS has set pulse patterns and targets one specific part of the brain, but MeRT targets specific locations in your brain and customizes pulse patterns based on your unique brain mapping.  MeRT is a precision guided therapy.

Although rTMS is FDA-cleared for depression and related conditions, MeRT can relieve depression as well as a broader range of conditions since it’s more personalized. 

This treatment is a very safe and gentle therapy. MeRT is a cutting-edge treatment process that combines TMS, a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and an Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) to analyze and formulate treatments that are tailored to each individual’s unique brain pattern. 

MeRT is an emerging technology that aims to improve brain function and communication. The equipment used in MeRT is FDA-cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder and OCD and is used off-label to treat a wide variety of conditions.

What is the MeRT process like? 

The MeRT process at Braincare Performance Center - Cardiff includes: 

EEG Brainwave Recording

The team performs a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and an electrocardiogram (EKG). The qEEG measures brain electrical activity and maps the areas that aren’t working as they should. The EKG records your heart’s electrical signals and measures brain-heart coordination. The EEG Brainwave Recording is a relaxing, painless experience.

Evaluation

The Initial Clinical Evaluation appointment for MeRT Treatment is about 45 minutes long. During this time, you will meet with Nurse Practitioner Kayleigh Prowse for your clinical evaluation. She will answer any questions you may have and discuss your applicable treatment plan. Please note that Dr. Julie Kim, our Medical Director, oversees all treatment for each patient. 

Treatment

MeRT treatment is 4 - 8 weeks, depending on the patient's needs. Appointments are daily, Monday-Friday, for 35 -40 minutes each. After each two-week treatment phase, we do a follow-up qEEG and evaluate how your brain is responding to treatment.
